Packaging advice

Packaging a package or pallet shipment

It is of course important that your customer receives the goods without damage and unfortunately (too) many companies underestimate the importance of good and transport-worthy packaging. We are happy to give you advice without obligation based on a photo that you send us.

Make sure that the packages or goods do not protrude over the edges of the pallet. Attach the address label(s) to the upper right corner of the long side of each pallet or package (on two sides and not on the top). Always secure the shipment to the pallet, for example with stretch film or tension straps. Use "do not stack" cones and "fragile" stickers if pallets are not stackable. Make sure that the contents of the shipment cannot move in the packaging. Confirm any special handling instructions in a visible place. Close the package tightly so that it cannot open during transport.

Prevent damage to your package or pallet shipments during transport by properly reinforcing the edges. Use edge protectors or corner profiles for this. Strapping tape is available made of steel or plastic for heavy work. This is not intended for bundling packages, but rather for strengthening heavy packages or pallets.

✅ Stuffing paper: use wads or strings to fix the contents of the box. And you can do the same with paper buffer blocks, without filling up all the space in the box.

✅ Air cushions: there are various air-filled films with which you can fix the contents of the shipment. A big plus is that they have an extremely low weight and will therefore not unnecessarily weigh down a shipment.

✅ Foam bags: these contain PUR foam that perfectly fills empty spaces when used. Resistant, shock-absorbing packaging material that allows you to quickly pack and secure goods in the box.

On the transport insurance page we explain what is legally regulated and what financial risks you run in the event of damage.

Packaging

Important information for the recipient of a shipment

For example, if packaging is damaged, the shipment is visibly incomplete, or damage to the cargo is noticeable, a note must be made on the waybill upon receipt of the goods. If after delivery it appears that there is damage to the cargo, you must report this to us in writing as soon as possible. In all cases, (detailed) photos must be taken immediately of the packaging(s) and damage(s). The CMR mentions an immediate reporting obligation for visible damage and a reporting period of 7 days for damage that is not immediately visible.

It is good to proactively inform your customers that they should visually inspect the shipment upon receipt of the goods and, in case of visible damage, make a comment on the waybill or packing slip.
